Abstract:

Physical Observation for Nutritional Deficiencies: Learning how to observe physical features can help one determine nutritional deficiency patterns and health needs prior to disease occurring. This information is imperative in today's health care and in the "sub-clinical" patient, before disease progresses to outright symptoms and blood changes. Traditional doctors used physical observations of our body to confirm our health issues. They did not and could not rely on testing or blood work. Physical observations enable one to take the guess work out of nutritional deficiencies and organ health patterns. This class insures a measurement of patient evaluation as a critical tool in the medical toolbox. If pre-and post-nutritional evaluations and sound patient observations are added, the practitioner can confirm the findings while creating a recordable and even visual benchmark for patients to see the change and progress. This approach heightens the practitioner's ability to identify root causes, target priorities, and integrate patient interaction, while improving understanding, retention and compliance. Using functional assessments of the digestive system, thyroid, adrenals, and more, the health and direction of care becomes more obvious to see, treat, and monitor. While correlating specific observations and testing procedures, one can determine organ health, utilization of nutritional factors, and what direction is best for the client. We will look at the tongue, face, nails, reflex points, simple office testing procedures and holistic care to determine how to help our patients through physical observations for nutritional deficiencies.

Conference Series Naturopathy 2018 International Conference Keynote Speaker Kelly Armstrong photo
Biography:

Kelly Armstrong has been an Occupational Therapist for over 20 years and currently has a private practice in Jacksonville, FL. She has specialized in Pediatrics, Pain Management and has recently turned her focus to Scar Release and acupuncture modalities and their complex relationships with the nervous systems and relating health issues. She is certified in Sensory Integration (SIPT), Interactive Metronome, and Therapeutic Listening. She has also extensively studied Oriental Medicine, NeuroAnatomical Acupuncture, and Integrative Pain management.

Abstract:

Target Audience:

This lecture is directed towards practitioners who wish to increase their scientific knowledge of how acupuncture influences HRV, stress, exercise tolerance, parasympathetic activity and cortisol levels, for improved patient outcomes in their current or future patient population.

Title:

Science of Acupuncture.  Measuring Autonomic and Endocrine Health benefits of Acupuncture Therapies.

Session Summary:

Learning Objectives:

1) Describe the dimensions and relationships of HRV, cortisol levels and Autonomic Nervous system testing, and their relationship and implications to the current Acupuncture setting.

2) Describe and scientifically analyze the influence of Microcurrent Acupuncture (MA) applied to Battlefield Acupuncture Protocol has on HRV, stress, parasympathetic and cortisol levels when applied to chronic pain patients. Published Medical Acupuncture -Volume 29, Number 2, 2017

3)  Learn to identify and locate key acupuncture-trigger points that have been scientifically supported to positively influence autonomic regulation and stress cortisol levels.

Level of Learning:

Introductory or beginner

Lecture Description:

It is widely accepted in science that imbalances of the parasympathetic (rest and healing, calming) and sympathetic (flight/fight/stress) branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), called stress, are directly linked to wide variety of pain and disease. The sympathetic system is designed for short term survival creating a cascade of neurophysiological responses. However, it is “upregulation” or persistent tone (stress) in this system that is believed to be related to chronic pain, disease and the impediment of patient health. Real time analysis of HRV and sympathetic upregulation may be now accurately measured two ways, Heart rate Variability (HRV) and cortisol levels.  This lecture will report findings of microcurrent therapy applied to Battlefield acupuncture (BFA) protocol on nervous system regulation.

The autonomic nervous system response to Microcurrent Acupuncture (MA) applied to BFA protocol reflected a statistically significant pre-post improvement in seven of the 29 markers collected: pain on the VAS scale was reduced by 63%, heart rate variability improved by 42%, High Frequency-Vagal tone improved by 56% exercise tolerance increased by 22%, parasympathetic activity improved by 38% , stress reduced by 27% , PTGi cardiac marker of endothelial function, arterial blood flow, and Autonomic Nervous System regulation improved by 48% and Cardiac marker PTGVLFi - an autonomic Nervous System regulation marker of endothelial function and an indicator of Beta Cell activity had a reduction of 36% Salivary cortisol decreased by 14% , but was not statistically significant.

This evidenced-based seminar will explore the relationship between acupuncture therapies, HRV, cortisol stress levels, and their influence on exercise tolerance and pain management in the Acupuncture setting.

Conclusion

Autonomic nervous system testing and cortisol measurement levels are effective tools for real time measurements of several key Acupuncture metrics, including: HRV, stress, muscle oxygenation, chronic pain an exercise tolerance.  The implications are significant industry wide as a measurement of Acupuncture outcomes and for an informed choice of modalities for the present or future rehabilitation of chronic pain and stress related patients.

Title: 100 Patterns of pulse for accurate diagnosis and healing in acupuncture.
Speaker
Biography:

Sumita Satarkar has completed her  PhD at the age of 39 years from Open International  University for Complementary Medicine , Colombo and  doing another Doctorate and Phd in Integrative Medicine at International Quantum University of Integrative Medicine , USA. She has presented more than 50 papers in National and International conferences in India and overseas.

She is 1st Indian woman Acupuncturist represented  in United Nations , Newyork.

Abstract:

Pulse is one of the most important diagnostic tool used from ancient times, which needs accuracy and focus. Unlike any other faculty of medicine, this age old science of alternative healing is a study of ‘energy’ which neither can be measured nor be seen .It can only be palpated at the wrist. Palpation and its interpretation bring forth the detail analysis of energy and its patterns and thus further can be accurately diagnose the exact illness or disorder. This is called a ‘’ Pulse diagnosis.’’

Because of the need of going deeper into my own understanding and knowledge, I started researching and studying this subject intensely and got some extraordinary results.

Following is the brief summary of my findings so far as my research is going on at present.

THE PULSE & DIAGNOSIS PATTERNS

The Pulse has dynamism, fluidity, and changeability. It is multi-dimensional in depth, rate, rhythm, strength, shape etc reflecting the overall wellbeing in person, identifying the state of mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

MY FINDINGS:

The Pulse is the study of around 1,00,000 patients so far, has shown me a clear, multi- layered and textured picture of these dimensions. This led me go deeper into analyzing it further, to finally find approximately 100 definite patterns, proving as  the most effective guiding tool in diagnosing the complete ill and/or otherwise condition of patients and help to understand the line of treatment and prognosis of the disease.

Abstract:

1962, Alma Ata, the World Health Organization (WHO) sponsored an international Conference at the University of Kazakhstan, deliberations and understandings in this conference would  about two and half decades later  build up to the  Alma Ata Declaration in 1978, i.e. global strategy for public health and preventive medicine which epitomized as Health for all by the year 2000 AD.

This strategy entailed the use of all available healing methods of both Orthodox, Traditional (TM)-Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to reach this goal, and has given impetus to the recent global development of CAM & TM.

CAM/TM practices has had an unbelievable global demand and some sort of  acceptance that it is becoming an integral part of some country’s Health Care Delivery Services, as Countries like China, India, France, Saudi Arabia and others have at various stages incorporated CAM  to their health care delivery system, and their people are just loving it !!

The global upsurge in the demand for CAM services is traceable to the many clients who troop to CAM facilities to seek other healing options.

Concerns raised by clients who have been on long use of some Conventional Medicines/Services include but not limited to-

-Iatrogenesis.

-Life time dependence on medications and other procedures for chronic disease sufferers.

CAM has great prospect in Africa, reportedly about 78% of the African populace rely on TM/CAM practices for their health care needs.

Presently, Nigeria and South Africa are taking the lead in Africa to some extent in the proper structuring of the CAM/TM Systems.

*Increase in optional access to various Therapeutics Modes & Increase in life expectancy rate are some prospects of CAM defined in this work.

The challenges of CAM though daunting are not unsurmountable, i.e.

*Standardization, proper Educational/Professional Structures and others can come to the rescue.
